01

Describe the work beyond a broad label

A request to repair plumbing can mean an accessible part, a fixture replacement, a new connection, a relocated drain, a heater installation, or a remodel. First use the complete property address to confirm the governing authority, since a mailing address does not by itself establish Village jurisdiction. Give the appropriate department a plain description of the work, including piping moves, wall openings, fixture changes, and other trades.

02

Use the current department page first

The Village of Island Lake Building Department page links permit applications, building information, fees, water-connection permits, contractor registration, and inspection contacts. Those current links are the starting point. The older permit-requirements PDF lists new or upgraded plumbing among examples, but its 2019 revision date means it should be treated as background, not the final instruction for a current job.

03

Assign each step before work begins

Ask who prepares the application, pays fees, supplies license and registration information, schedules inspection, provides access, and keeps the work visible when required. Put the responsibility in the estimate or project plan. A verbal promise that permits are handled is less useful than a clear list of the documents and checks the provider will supply.

04

Keep completion evidence with the repair record

Save permit numbers, approved documents, inspection results, correction notices, and final completion information when they apply. Ask the current authority about any unresolved requirement before closing an area or treating the project as complete. This guide does not decide whether a permit is needed, waive a requirement, or establish that a contractor is registered.
